
Live streaming events: what it takes to do it well
A live stream that actually holds together depends less on camera work and more on connectivity, monitoring, and the platform it lands on.
A live stream looks simple from the audience's side: a video plays, people watch, and comments or questions show up somewhere on screen. Behind that simplicity sits a chain of decisions that has to hold for the entire length of the event, not just the first five minutes. Get one link wrong and the stream buffers, drops, or goes dark while the room in front of the cameras carries on as if nothing happened.

The internet connection is where it usually breaks
Cameras, lighting, and audio can all be excellent and the stream will still fail if the upload connection can't hold a steady bitrate for two or three hours straight. In Zimbabwe this is the first thing to plan around: fibre at a venue is not guaranteed, and even where it exists, load shedding can take out a router mid-event. A single connection is a single point of failure, so a second connection, often mobile data on a different network, needs to be ready to take over the moment the primary one drops.
The encoder and the person watching it
The encoder is the piece of hardware or software that takes the camera feed and turns it into something a platform can broadcast, and the choice between a dedicated hardware encoder and a laptop running encoding software depends on how much redundancy the event needs. Just as important is having someone whose only job is to watch the output: bitrate, dropped frames, audio levels, and whether the stream is actually live on the platform. Camera operators are focused on framing and movement in the room; they are not looking at a dashboard, so someone else has to be.
Where it streams depends on who is watching
YouTube works well for events that benefit from being searchable afterward and reaching a broad public audience. Facebook still reaches an older and more local audience in Zimbabwe and tends to generate more comments and shares in the moment. A private, unlisted link makes more sense for a corporate meeting, an internal briefing, or a paying audience that shouldn't have open access. Conferences, church services, product launches, and concerts each pull toward a different platform because each one is really speaking to a different audience.
Putting it together on the day
None of this works as separate pieces; connectivity, encoding, monitoring, and platform choice have to be planned together before the event starts, not fixed once something goes wrong.
