What does a media production company actually do?
A plain-language look at what video production, photography, event coverage and podcast production actually involve, and what to check before hiring one in Zimbabwe.
If you have never worked with one, "media production company" can mean almost anything. In practice, most fall into a few categories: some focus on video such as corporate films, documentaries and adverts, some on photography, some on live events, and a growing number on podcasts and audio. Zimbabwe has companies working across all of these, often within the same team.
The core services
Video production covers everything from a two-minute company profile to a full documentary. The common thread is a script or plan, a shoot, and an edit. Photography ranges from single-day event coverage to ongoing brand shoots. Event coverage usually means video and photography running at the same time, which is its own logistics problem: multiple angles, audio that has to work in a noisy room, and a same-week or next-day turnaround. Podcast production is newer here. It means a studio, recording equipment, and someone who can edit audio, and increasingly video, into something people will actually finish listening to.
Who hires one, and why
The clients are not only advertisers. NGOs and development organisations commission documentary-style video to show program impact. Corporate clients like CABS and Old Mutual commission event coverage and brand content. Individuals hire the same companies for weddings, family portraits and personal branding. The service is the same; the brief and the budget change.
What to actually check before hiring one
Ask to see full projects, not just a highlight reel. A two-minute demo hides more than it shows. Ask who is actually going to be on set, since some companies subcontract crew you never meet. Ask about turnaround time in writing, since "a few days" means different things to different studios. And ask what happens to the raw footage after the project ends. Some companies keep and reuse it, some do not.
